Frequently Asked Questions
Who will photograph my wedding?
I (Tonya Ritchie) will personally photograph your wedding, bridal portraits & etc. My assistant photographer (usually my husband Jason) will accompany me at every wedding, and at some portrait shoots. On occasion, my assistant may be another photographer that wants to help out for the day, and also our daughter Taylor (who has done over 20 weddings with us). My assistant helps me with my equipment, and is my second shooter for the entire day. So you always have two photographers for your day, at no extra cost to you. This helps us as well, we are able to be in two separate locations, making sure we get those important shots.
What type of training and experience do you have?
Photography was our number one hobby for many years, we traveled to many places and just photographed everything and everyone! In 2003, I became interested in Stock Photography, and I submitted many landscape/nature images to a large online Stock Photography site and they accepted my images and people started to purchase them. Around the same time, family and friends started asking for our services. Our images were being purchased by our family and friends for their own homes and for gifts! That was very exciting! We were asked to do family portraits, birthday parties, photo restoration and then a friends wedding in the summer of 2003. That's when my love for wedding photography really took off. We had so much fun photographing the wedding and I couldn't believe that I got to do something I love and get paid! I started reading and learning everything I could get my hands on about wedding and portrait photography. In 2007 I decided to sign up for a wedding photography and wedding planning training course which was an excellent experience. My husband started working with Adobe Photoshop in 1998 and has been doing Photo Restoration and enhancement for over 7 years. Photo manipulation and restoration is his field of expertise. He is also very experienced in photographic lighting techniques and web development, and we work great together as a team!
What is your photography style?
My photography style is somewhere between traditional and journalistic. I like to be very creative with my photos, but I also want to give the bride what she wants. So if it's traditional photos that you are mostly looking for, that is no problem at all. I think it's important to have a mixture of different types of photos for your prints and albums which include artistic and creative images, candid photos of the day, and posed/ unposed formals. We want you to feel at ease with us, and just be your natural self. I am not a bossy photographer, this day is all about you and what you want. I am only there to document it for you. Each wedding is different, and I will adapt to your schedule for the day and your style. I want the bride and all the family to feel comfortable and at ease. This also goes for bridal portraits, family portraits, etc. I like to meet with each client and go over exactly what it is you are looking for, the style you like the most, and the types of images you desire. That gives us a better idea of what you are looking for, but it is never set in stone. If you have a particular pose in mind, that's great as we are always open for your ideas and input. If your family wants a certain posed shot, or you just have an idea that may seem strange, it's not! Sometimes the strangest ideas turn into the most beautiful and memorable photographs. The sky is the limit!
How many hours will you photograph my wedding?
Our wedding packages include up to 6 hours of shooting. The day usually begins with me photographing you getting ready. Most brides want "getting ready" photos, but if you do not, then we will start after you are fully ready, that's all up to you. It is very important that we meet or have a phone consultation to go over all the details, make sure we are there long enough to get all those important moments of your day. If we find that 6 hours is not going to be enough time to get those shots, or you just want us there longer, there is a $100 fee per hour over 6 hours and that must be arranged prior to your wedding. Unfortunately, because our prices are already so low, we cannot discount our price if the wedding will be less than 6 hours.
Why are your prices so low?
This is a question that I get asked very often. I set my prices to what I believe is fair and try to keep them low to attract new clients. I don't spend a lot on advertising and rely mostly on word of mouth so this helps me keep my prices low. I love getting new clients to work with and by having lower prices helps me do this. I do want to assure you that just because my prices are low, that does not mean my quality of work or attention to detail is low. I love my job, I get so excited waking up every day having another wedding or family to photograph, and that is what drives me.
Do you travel anywhere and what are your travel fees?
Yes, we love to travel, and we travel anywhere! Our package prices include 40 mile roundtrip (20 there & 20 back) to your wedding location without any extra charge.Over 40 miles, we charge .75 per mile. If your wedding location is more than 2 hours away lodging fees may apply. Those fees would be discussed and calculated during the booking and be added in to your total.
When will my proofs be ready to view and how do I view them?
Wedding proofs will be ready to view within 3-4 weeks after the wedding. Engagement Sessions, Bridal portraits, family portraits, etc. will be ready in approximately 2 weeks after the session. These times may change during extremely busy months, which are usually between May and October. I will always give you an estimate as to when the proofs will be ready after the wedding. I like to schedule bridal or engagement sessions at least 30 days prior to the wedding day to ensure the prints will be back in time in case they need to be displayed at the wedding or reception. After your proofs are ready to view, I will email or call you with a private web address that you can use to view and purchase each proof. You will also be able to send this personalized web address to your friends and family for them to view and purchase as well. Other ways to view your proofs include purchasing a DVD Slideshow, or purchasing a Proof Book which allows you to view your proofs at home if you cannot or do not want to view them online. The DVD Slideshow and Proof Book are also a good way to show your friends and family your photos if they do not have a computer.
What is the difference between a Proof DVD, DVD Slideshow and a DVD with Digital Negatives?
A Proof DVD is a collection of all the final proofs that you can view from home using your DVD player or computer, and will have our logo across the front of them. This is not a DVD that you can print from, it is only a way for you to view your photos at home. A DVD Slideshow is also a collection of all of your images with our logo at the bottom of the pictures. The slideshow includes music of your choice, special effects, and is a really nice way to view your images with your friends and family. Slideshows are also a good gift to give someone instead of an album. You cannot print from the slideshow, you can only view them. When you purchase the Digital Negatives, you will receive a CD that contains high resolution jpeg files that you can use to print at home or at any photo lab of your choice. It will also include a Shared Copyright form for you to take with you when you have them printed.
How do I purchase prints, albums, and other products?
There are a couple different ways to purchase prints and other products. When you view your proofs online, each print will have a drop down option below it to order specific print sizes. You choose all the prints that you want to order, and the shopping cart will take you to a secure online checkout. We use Pay pal Checkout, which emails me your order immediately. You can pay directly online using your debit card, credit card or Pay pal account if you have one. This is the easiest and quickest way to order prints. If you will not be ordering online or will be ordering products not listed online, you can email, fax, or call me with your order. Each print will have a file number that is located at the bottom of each online proof. I will need this file number and the size of print and quantity you want to order. Prints will only be submitted to our printing lab after payment is received. After you have decided which prints you want in your album, you can call or email me with the file numbers of each photo. Albums are fully customizable, so I do suggest that we meet to go over the details that are available for your album. Payment for the album must also be received prior to ordering. Digital negatives are ordered a little differently. If you choose to purchase the high resolution digital negatives for printing, instead of ordering prints, we will still provide online proofs for your friends and family to view and purchase, and we will mail you a DVD of the digital negatives after payment has been received. The digital negatives will include all the proofs from your wedding day. Prints, albums, and all other products will be mailed directly to you. If you notice any problems or errors with your order, I must be notified within 24 hours.
Do you shoot film or digital?
We shoot exclusively in digital. We feel digital is the best choice for us because we started photography with digital and because it allows us to be more flexible, allowing more time to spend on you, not our equipment. Digital also allows us to take many more shots often in rapid succession which ultimately allows us to offer more photos for you to choose from. Black and white film is also a hobby of ours and we sometimes like the look it provides, so don't be surprised if we have our vintage film cameras there just for fun!
What type of equipment do you use?
We use professional Nikon digital camera bodies, flashes and lenses. We also use various other lighting and studio equipment. All of our prints and products are ordered through an online photo lab that only works with professional photographers. They provide beautiful photographs and have had a reputation for many years of providing high quality prints, albums, and other products.
Do you print photographs in house?
We do have a few wide format printers but choose to have an online lab handle all printing tasks based on a few important reasons. The most important reason is print longevity. Our online lab uses an archival printing process that should last hundreds of years compared to most inkjet prints which only last 10-20 years. The second reason we choose an online lab is the larger array of paper and print choices and sizes. The metallic print paper is truly stunning and must be seen in person. It has an almost 3-D look to it. We keep a selection of print samples on hand and would be happy to show you all of the options available.
Can you edit photos and change to B&W or Sepia?
Yes, I personally edit each and every photograph myself if needed, and my assistant specializes in extensive editing and restoration. Each photograph is examined at high magnification by me before it's shown to you. Some things I look for and edit are stray hairs, blemishes, and anything that I notice that doesn't make your photograph as perfect as it can be. If there is something specific that you would like me to edit for you, maybe you'd like a mole or a few wrinkles to be less defined, that can be done as well. This type of editing would need to be discussed prior to the wedding or portrait session, and there would be no extra charge for this. After the proofs are online for you to view and order, any editing of the photos at that point would be an extra charge based on what is needed. Any photograph can be changed to sepia or B&W after they are online, for an additional charge.
What do I need to do to hire you for my wedding?
First, just give us a call or email to see if we are available for your date. To hold your date, a $100 non-refundable retainer fee and the signed contract are required, which you can download from our downloads section or I can mail you one. After those have been received, your wedding day will be reserved. We never schedule two events on the same day. Upon receipt of the retainer fee and contract, a Welcome Package will be mailed to you. The package will include the contact information sheets for you to fill out, and other important information. The remaining balance would be due at least two weeks prior to your wedding. This is to ensure enough time for the payment to clear if paying by check, paypal, etc. Monthly payment plans are also available if needed and we never charge financing charges, your package is split up into monthly payments with the last payment due 2 weeks prior to your wedding. If you want to hire us for other other photo sessions (engagements, bridals, etc.) no retainer fee is needed. Payment for those sessions are due on the day of the session.
Do you have a studio?
Currently, we do not have an indoor studio. We consider the outside world our studio. We love natural lighting, and we try to schedule outdoor photo shoots during morning hours and late evening hours to take advantage of the beautiful outdoor lighting that is provided for us. We also provide on-location studio work as well. We have portable studio equipment, lighting and backdrops to give you beautiful images right at the location of your choice. We can set up our studio equipment just about anywhere, as long as we have enough space for our backdrops, and electricity for our lights. Most churches, reception halls, and other large rooms work great. We would need to visit the area prior to scheduling a studio session to ensure we have enough space.
What happens if we change our wedding date or cancel our wedding?
The retainer fee is non-refundable. This fee will cover any time that has been spent on our part planning and preparing for your wedding day. If your wedding date is changed, we will do everything we can to accommodate your new date. However, in the event that we are booked for the new date, and cannot photograph your wedding, any amount that you have paid over the deposit will be refunded back to you as long as we are given at least 30 days notice. If your wedding is cancelled, and you do not plan to reschedule, any amount over the deposit will also be refunded back to you as long as we have 30 days notice. If we do not have at least 30 days notice prior to canceling or rescheduling your wedding, only half of the total package price will be refunded. This allows us enough time to schedule another event for that date.

While you will be provided with the Shared Copyright for printing purposes only, it is unlawful and illegal to scan, alter or edit the images in any way. I take great care in editing each image and the quality is very important to me. Scanning or altering an image lowers the resolution, which in turn depreciates its value, and along with it, my reputation as well. So please respect my work and my copyright.
